When a company quotes you for a home shift, the base price covers loading and unloading at ground level. The moment goods need to be carried up or down stairs — because there is no service lift, or the lift is too small for large furniture — a separate floor surcharge applies.

In Mumbai, this is almost unavoidable. A large proportion of buildings in South Mumbai, Dadar, Kurla, Grant Road, Ghatkopar, and old Andheri societies have no service lift. Even newer buildings often have a passenger-only lift that cannot accommodate sofas, beds, or refrigerators.

Many companies quote only labour and transport — and treat packing material as a completely separate line item billed at the end. You agreed to ₹8,000 for your 2BHK shift. The team arrives, packs everything, and when the bill is presented, an extra ₹2,500 for “packing material used” appears.

For a standard 2BHK Mumbai move, packing material typically costs:

• Standard packing (cartons + bubble wrap): ₹1,000–2,500
• Premium packing with double-wall cartons and foam: ₹2,500–5,000
• Monsoon waterproof packing add-on: ₹800–2,000 extra

GST at 18% is mandatory on all packers and movers services in India. It cannot be waived. The problem is that many companies show a quote excluding GST — then add 18% on billing day. When a quote is shared over WhatsApp without explicitly stating whether GST is included, customers naturally assume the figure they see is the final amount.

On a ₹10,000 quoted move, 18% GST adds ₹1,800 to your bill. On a ₹20,000 move, it adds ₹3,600. This is not a small rounding error — it is a significant addition that should always be disclosed upfront.

Most moving companies include furniture disassembly at the pickup point in their standard quote. The assumption — natural but incorrect — is that re-assembly at the destination is also included. It frequently is not, particularly for intercity moves from Mumbai to Pune, Thane, or Navi Mumbai where the delivery team may be different from the packing team.

You end up in your new home with bed frames in pieces, a wardrobe leaning against the wall, and a modular kitchen unit in boxes — with no one available to assemble them without paying extra. Typical re-assembly charges:

• Bed re-assembly: ₹300–600 per bed
• Wardrobe re-assembly: ₹500–1,500 per unit
• Modular kitchen unit: ₹1,500–3,000

This is the hidden charge with the highest potential financial impact. Many companies include “insurance” in their quote. The customer pays the premium assuming their goods are covered. When something is damaged, the claim is rejected, ignored, or settled through an informal internal process that pays a fraction of actual value.

Genuine goods-in-transit insurance is issued by a licensed insurer registered with IRDAI — not by the moving company itself. It has a policy number, a declared goods value, and a formal claims process. What many movers offer instead is a verbal “we will compensate if something breaks” commitment, which has no legal enforceability.
